Knee Pain: Using Glucosamine To Treat Patella Femoral Syndrome

Patella Femoral Syndrome or "runner's knee" is a common condition that involves inflammation of the patellar tendon in the knee. It can cause pain, clicking, grinding noises in the knee and overall discomfort. Misalignment of the knee joint contributes to the inflammation of the patellar tendon. Repetitive motion such as running, jumping or even riding a stationary bike can cause this condition. Other factors that contribute to the misalignment of the knee joint are weakness in the muscles surrounding it. The cartilage also deteriorates under the patella (knee cap). When the cartilage begins to "wear and tear" more pressure placed onto the knee joint which results in the knee cap going out of alignment. When that happens the knee cap ceases to glide properly over the femur (thigh bone). Normally the knee cap moves along a groove on the femur. When the knee cap isn't properly aligned in the groove, you experience pain under the knee cap.

I was diagnosed with patella femoral syndrome in my knees years ago. I often experienced the humiliating sound of grinding and clicking in my knees as I walked up and down stairs. I sounded like a robot. Others have experienced cracking or popping sounds when squatting, standing up, or going up and down stairs. My doctor prescribed a series of leg exercises to strengthen the muscles surrounding the knee joint to help ease my symptoms. While the exercises did offer relief after a period of time, once I stopped doing them, the symptoms returned. I was looking for something that would offer long-term relief and didn't have debilitating side-effects.

I came upon an all-natural supplement containing glucosamine and a proprietary blend of all-natural substances which took away the grinding and pain in my knees in a matter of weeks. I would still encourage you to exercise your knees if you're already doing so to strengthen the surrounding muscles, but for added benefit to promote healing of your knee joints and to treat the deteriorating cartilage and inflammation, I recommending taking an all-natural supplement containing glucosamine sulfate.

Glucosamine is an amino sugar found in the body that is necessary for the construction of connective tissue and healthy cartilage. It is the critical building block that forms these tissues. This contributes to the formation of large protein molecules that act like a sponge to hold water giving connective tissues elasticity and cushioning effects. This also provides a protective sheath to help protect against excessive wear and tear of the joints. Without glucosamine, our tendons, ligaments, and other body tissues will not form properly. Normally our bodies produce sufficient levels of glucosamine to form the various compounds needed to build connective tissue and healthy cartilage. As we age, or with increased activity, our bodies may not be able to keep up with the demand.

For optimum health benefits, I recommend pharmaceutical grade glucosamine. Pharmaceutical grade means 99% pure without any additives or unnecessary substances which could cause unwanted side-effects. Pharmaceutical grade products can cost a little more, but the difference is small and worth every penny. Here's the bottom line: A cheap supplement will not be properly absorbed into your body. A slightly more expensive pharmaceutical grade supplement is metabolized and absorbed well.

Knee Pain: How To Get Rid Of Pain And Creaking Knees

Knee pain can be the result of several underlying medical conditions. Two of the most common reasons you may suffer with knee pain are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteoarthritis is commonly called "wear and tear" arthritis. It is caused by the breakdown and loss of cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones and causes them to rub together. Osteoarthritis results in pain and stiffness in the knees. The shocking statistic is that 27 million Americans suffer from this condition.

Rheumatoid Arthritis is a different type of arthritis that's not caused by wear and tear of the joints but a defect in the body's immune system that causes it to attack and break down cartilage and damage the joints. It also causes pain in the knees and other joints and affects 1.3 million Americans.

In addition to the pain and discomfort caused by these conditions, another unwanted symptom is creaking knees. You may have heard or felt the creaking and grinding in your knees as you walk up and down stairs.

I have found an all-natural treatment that helps with both of these conditions.

My experience with a glucosamine sulfate-based pharmaceutical grade supplement has been nothing short of amazing. I have osteoarthritis and suffered with clicking, creaking and grinding knees for years. It wasn't until I started taking an all-natural supplement that the pain, clicking and grinding went away in a matter of weeks.

You have probably heard of glucosamine for joint pain relief. Glucosamine provides the building blocks of joint and skin tissue essential for joint health and well-being. There are also additional supplements you should look for in a glucosamine product if you're serious about getting rid of knee pain and creaking noises. Curcumin is one such substance. It is the major antioxidant found in Turmeric, which is a potent anti-inflammatory and pain inhibitor. Pomegranate Extract is another. This powerful natural antioxidant is anti-arthritic and promotes cartilage repair.

I recommend pharmaceutical grade supplements because they don't contain fillers and are more easily absorbed into your body to provide optimum health benefits.

If you keep up with sporting news, it was reported that Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers has worn away all the cartilage in both knees and has bone rubbing against bone. I hope his doctors are also considering all-natural glucosamine based treatments. While it is not a cure, I'm sure it would help ease Mr. Bryant's symptoms.

In addition to my own success with a particular glucosamine-based supplement, here is a testimonial from a medical doctor that also recommends this product:

"I have been very pleased with the results after introducing your product to my patients. They have reported that they are no longer experiencing the aches and pains in their knees as they once were. I will continue to recommend your products to my patients". --Dr. Berry

In general, taking capsules of glucosamine sulfate twice a day can give you relief from knee pain and creaking and grinding knees.

Knee Joint Pain: You Don't Have To Live With It Anymore!

Have you ever stood up just to find yourself sitting straight back down again because of a knee joint pain? Bad enough as this is when you reach a more stately age, but it can also happen to you when you're a lot younger, too.

In this article we're going to have a look at knee joint pain and some of the reasons why you may be starting to feel its effects, no matter what age you are.

Often you'll just feel as though you've a twinge, or that you've stood up too quickly and something has just 'clicked' to give you the knee joint pain, and, as possible as that all is, it's also possible that it stems from something else.

There are a number of ligaments and tendons in the knee and any of these can pick up an injury for the most innocuous of reasons. You can cause minor and sometimes major damage to them by over stretching, or even by not stretching. It can be a difficult balance knowing how much is too much when it comes to stretching.

Before doing any form of exercise that could cause knee joint pain - which may or may not include standing up in the case of some people - it's always a good idea to warm up. There are plenty of good warm up routines that you can try out, but if you've already had some problems with knee joint pain you'll want to find the exercises that don't put too much stress on the part of the body.

Another thing that may cause some damage is when you bump your knee on something. In the case of a sports person that could be the accidental 'nudging' of an opponent's head, or, in the case of our person doing a bit of casual standing up, it could be caused by bashing the knee on a coffee table. The effect, bizarrely enough, is pretty much the same.

The knee is one of the most exposed bones in the body and covers, as mentioned earlier, a number of tendons and ligaments, as well as cartilage that can easily be damaged. With all of those things that can be tweaked, or damaged, it's a difficult thing to know just how serious your knee joint pain actually is.

As you get older other factors can start to creep in too. There is a natural degeneration in the bones and cartilage of older people and this will often lead to the knee joint pain that they get. There aren't too many things that you can do to prevent this natural aging process from happening, however, if you take the time to visit your doctor and get an exercise routine that is suited to you, you should at least be able to help slow down the effect of aging on your joints.

So, if you're young, old, fit, or unfit there's still a strong possibility that you'll get a knee joint pain. You could be out running and notice the effects of it sometime after you've stopped, or you could be standing up after kneeling down tending to the garden; it's not something you can really become immune to.

If a problem does flare up then you should see if you can treat the knee joint pain yourself i.e. apply something cold to it, apply something hot to it, stop whatever you're doing and sit down, unless it happened as you were sitting down to start with, in that case, stay where you are.

I had all of the above knee joint pain problems myself and so like you my search began for a way to end it. Then...

Knee Pain Relief - What Causes Knee Pain?

Your knee is a joint, and the main function of our joints is to link one bone to another to allow us to move freely. Joints are made up of ligaments and cartilage, and when well lubricated, they keep bones moving smoothly.

1. Knee Pain Causes

As we age the cartilage that lines our knees becomes thinner. The surfaces of the knee may not slide over each other as well as they once did, leading to osteoarthritis. This condition is characterized by bones grinding against each other resulting in pain and inflammation. It is estimated that osteoarthritis affects more than twenty million people in North America, and that number is expected to grow to at least forty million by 2020. Eighty-five percent of us who live to age 85 will likely develop knee osteoarthritis, unless we do something to prevent this. Ligaments, which hold joints together tend to become less elastic as we get older. This is because of chemical changes in the proteins that make up the ligaments. As we age, our ligaments tend to tear more easily, and are slower to heal.

2. Some General Tips For Reducing Joint Pain

- Strengthen and stretch the muscles surrounding the knee. Taking care of these muscles while working out has been shown to reduce knee pain. Work on stretching out the hamstrings calves and quadriceps muscles. Include resistance exercises for these muscle groups, such as squats and lunges for the quads, leg curls for the hamstrings and calf raises for the calves.

- Eat a diet rich in calcium from foods such as almonds, peas, oranges, spinach, beans, salmon, sardines and dairy products such as yogurt and skim milk.

- Maintain a healthy weight. Obesity has been proven to cause added strain on the knees. By staying active (for at least 20 minutes, 3-5 times per week) and avoiding high fat, processed foods, you can minimize the impact absorbed by the knees.

How To Deal With Unbearable Leg Pain

In contrast to popular belief, most women will seek medical assistance for varicose veins not only to have great looking legs, but also to get some relief from leg vein pain. These varicose veins which appear large, gnarled, bulgy, bluish and purple on legs could be uncomfortable and sore. In worse cases scenarios, the pain can cause a person to wake constantly at nights because of worn out feeling in the legs.

More adult women will be affected by varicose veins than men, however this hardly ever occur in teenage girls. The main causes are hormones and genetic or genes endowment. Most times, the first appearance of these veins would be when a female is pregnant and her bodily hormones undergo whirlwind changes. However, even adult women who've never been pregnant with a lean body and also have an active lifestyle could also have varicose veins, simply because their mothers were affected by them in the past. These adult women had been born with defective veins and rather than circulating the blood towards the heart, the blood will be bound in the veins.

The treatment for leg vein pain tends to be conventional. Women are encouraged to live an active lifestyle rather than an inactive one in order to promote a healthier blood circulation in her legs. There is also the option of wearing the stretchable support hosiery and elevating the legs whilst sleeping or lying down.

Conservative treatments will only take care of minimum discomfort. The troublesome pain will require a visit to a specialist who might necessitate the usage of non-invasive treatment options such as VNUS Closure, sclerotherapy and vein stripping. The first one will introduce RF energy that will heat up the collagen in the vein walls which causes it to contract and then completely seal up the vein. These treatment options are effective in eliminating varicose veins. However fresh varicose veins might develop and appear in other regions, particularly without appropriate lifestyle changes.

How to Speed Healing After Surgery or Accident

If you have recently had or are about to have surgery or if you have been injured in an accident you can improve your chances of a quicker recovery. Although surgery is sometimes necessary to help improve your health, or save your life, recovering from it can be very stressful on many levels. There are always factors to consider. Be certain to communicate with your medical team. Ask your doctor if there are any restrictions regarding movement, diet, climate, medications, requirements for at home medical assistance, or complementary therapies. They can help you lay out a recovery plan or wellness program. Beyond the typical recovery routine that may include medications, physical therapy, or visits with a counselor or nurse, your body will need to get all of the supportive nutrients that are required for complete and speedy recovery. The following list will give you some idea of all that can be added to your health recovery regime---with the approval of your physician.

1. Rest and immobilization as required by your doctor.Be sure that your room has adequate fresh air as ionization helps recovery time; having an oxygen rich environment and sunshine are important - again unless restricted by your medical team.

2. Bathing or showering as allowed - at least warm sponge baths to remove toxins being eliminated by your skin.

3. Fill the room with fresh flowers and plants to uplift your mood.

4. Watch TV programs and movies that make you feel good - and if you are allowed to laugh definitely watch movies that keep you laughing and giggling often. Improving your mood is definitely important to healing. In fact, there are now hospital humor programs where personnel are trained to help make you laugh. Laughter is very healing!

5. Allow only those visitors with a positive mental outlook; people that make you feel happy when you see them.

6. Keep your bowels moving. Some medications have side effects that include sluggish bowel movements or constipation. Drink purified water at room temperature unless you are really warm and cool water feels better to you. However, digestion is always best without too hot or too cold water in the digestive tract. Stay away from coffee because caffeine may be dehydrating. Consider the proper diet to help yourself heal well

7. Your diet (again check with your personal physician to be certain these suggestions are appropriate for you) should be filled with foods that are nutrient rich. And every bite and everything you drink should be as valuable as possible. That means that you should eat foods that are whole, grown without herbicides, pesticides, unchanged by man. Avoid processed foods and drinks. Get close to nature. Sometimes baby foods are required if you cannot swallow easily or have compromised digestion or loss of appetite. If not, just follow some of the suggestions below:

Clear broths either chicken, beef or veal are good for healing. Soups that start with a clear brother and contain fresh vegetables as well are important. When you are ill or injured your body will not readily produce the enzymes it needs to complete digestion. We will talk about digestion enzymes a little later.

Having sufficient protein is critical to healing. As protein is assimilated it is broken down into amino acids, often called the building blocks. So, if you are unable to eat foods such as fish, chicken, turkey, veal, portk, eggs, cheese, tofu, beans, nuts and seeds, you may need to purchase protein powders and mix them with soy milk, almond milk, regular milk, or just room temp water. Ionized whey powders are probably the easiest to assimilate in small quantities, but again chew the shake (I know that sounds weird) because it would be similar to eating a steak without chewing it--very concentrated and not easily absorbed even in powdered form if you are ill. Sip on the shakes that you drink--some people enjoy adding fruit like berries or bananas.

Eat more fruits and vegetables for starters. Avoid sugars, too much salt. Avoid snacks and lifeless foods that rob your body of energy. Avoid sodas, alcohol, white flour breads, cereals, pancakes and pastas. Avoid candy and cakes unless just occasional.

Buy organically grown and made foods if possible. Instead of drinking fruit juices eat the whole food. However, if you can get organically grown fruits and vegetables you can make delicious juices (save the pulp for soup) by combining dark green veggies with carrots and beets and pear juice or pineapple or cherry or apple to make it more palatable. Fruits and vegetables are loaded with life supporting nutrients such as antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. If you have a juicer that's terrific, if you don't you can just use a food processor or a blender to pulverize pulp and some seeds. Be sure that you chew the juice, do not just swallow it. Your digestive system will work best if you don't just swallow foods even when "juiced." Chew to begin the signal to the brain that you will need enzymes for complete digestion.

Beets and beet tops, dandelion greens, parsley, argula, mustard greens, carrots and tops, and fresh lemon juice are wonderful to support liver function. Supporting your liver is extremely important as it will help you to purify your blood. The liver will help to remove toxic residue from anaesthesia and other medications. It helps to flush away waste products of all kinds so it is very important to give the liver all that needs to do its job well.

8. Vitamins/Minerals/other nutrients: Giving your body a multi-vitamin/mineral formula is integral to healing. Concentrate as well on anti-oxidants such as Vitamins A,C,E, + Zinc. Add to that a formula that includes other protective elements such as grapeseed extract, green tea (not if you have high blood pressure because it is stimulating) berries,...many anti-oxidants available today in combination formulas. A separate bone building formula that includes, Vitamin D, Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, Boron, is important. (ask the doctor again because certain medications may be conflicting here) important to rebuilding bone.

9. Exercise and rehabilitation routinely help to strengthen muscle, ligaments, tendons and bones. Circulation is integral to wellness. Do what you are allowed to do. Check into "rubber stretch bands" to help initiate mobility if allowed --really good and gentle on joints for starters. Rebounders are also good for circulation as you become more mobile. These are mini trampolines and you can gently bounce while watching TV or listening to music--very enjoyable experience and good for you. Let your physical therapist, nurse or aid instruct you here.

10. Homeopathic remedies can also be beneficial to stimulate your body's immune system and healing response time. Please seek the advice of an MD who practices homeopathic medicine. Go to www.vithoulkas.com to find highly trained classical homeopaths in your area.

11. Stress relief measures such as Yoga, Bio-Feedback, Meditation: Learning how to quiet and clear the mind of stressful thoughts, worries, and fears can add much to your healing program. When your body stops getting disturbing signals from your brain it can more readily attend to physical healing. Do whatever seems to soothe you most. If allowed soaking in a warm tub might help reduce aching muscles and calm the nerves. Aromatherapy is also good for soothing your senses. Try lavender under your pillow, or vanilla candles to bring tranquility. Music is also wonderful for the nervous system. Choose calming classical music, new age flutes and bells, easy listening tunes to help stay relaxed.

12. Massage therapy and acupuncture or acupressure can complement your healing program. Bringing greater circulation to an injured or ill body can speed healing. Ask your physician if this is allowed. Sometimes having circulation cuffs on your legs are recommended by doctors after surgery or injury. This might be a good way to speed healing with limited exertion.

13. Digestive Enzymes help you assimilate and absorb nutrients that are important to healing. A product such as AbsorbAid that has been clinically tested and scientifically proven to increase the absorption of vital nutrients by up to 71% can really help speed recovery time. AbsorbAid is a 100% plant based enzyme formula that works well for most all individuals--if you can eat fruits and vegetables you can take AbsorbAid Platinum. It is so safe the original AbsorbAid has been used in feeding tubes in nursing home trials with excellent results at increasing protein utilization. Amino acids are the building blocks so adding AbsorbAid digestive enzymes can really be beneficial.

14. Visualization: Visualize yourself totally well, doing whatever it is that you most enjoy in your mind first ---I used to tell my patients to See, Feel and make it Real! The joy you get from imagining yourself completely well and up doing what you most enjoy can uplift your spirits and speed healing. Guided imagery tapes are readily available today.

15. Prayer and Faith: have a profound effect on healing for many people. When you believe that you will be well it can elevate your body's responses. There are many documented cases of people healing when they are certain they will! So prepare yourself for recovery and get excited about it!

Wishing you a speedy recovery!
